The Grevelingen used to be an open arm of the sea from and towards the North Sea. After the disastrous floods in 1953, the Delta Plan was launched. This resulted in the closing off of the Grevelingen in 1972 with the Brouwersdam. Consequently, “De Grevelingen” is the biggest salt water lake in Southwest Europe since 1972 and most certainly has quite a lot to offer to water sport fans. Out of the 11,000 ha. of water, 7,000 ha. have a depth of more than 1.5 m and therefore most boats can navigate it. The Grevelingen lake is crystal clear, has no tides and offers countless mooring possibilities at the many small islands.

The Flakkee sediment on the northern side of the Grevelingen lake forms a unique nature reserve with thousands of water and other birds. On these small islands, you can admire fjord horses and Heck cattle. On the sea side of the Brouwersdam, you will find the biggest and most beautiful beaches of The Netherlands, inviting you to sunbathe for a day. And in the evenings you can just stay outside and enjoy the end of the day without having to worry about mosquitoes: there are none at the Grevelingen lake!
